Our August 8th meeting will be at Timberlake Manor, as usual, starting at 6:30 PM.
Craig Buchek will deliver our feature presentation on the lessons learned about how to write better Rails apps “in the large”. It will touch on:
- Writing better cucumber stories
- Writing better cucumber step definitions
- Writing better specs
- Writing better controllers
Then we’ll take a look at the current struggles that our project is
having with a few overweight models. We’ll review some of the things
we have tried, and explore some of the other possibilities. We’re
still in the research phase on this, so can’t tell you the Right Thing
to do yet. (Amos King agreed to do follow up meeting on managing overweight models after the results are in. )

Jeff Barczewski will also give an update on the rvm-like multi-ruby he has been working on which could be an alternate choice to RVM on *nix systems. The prototype is working and work is progressing on the real version.
If you have any other projects you would like to discuss or share, please bring them to the meeting.
Nathan Neff can also give us an update about how Ruby teaching is going at Byteworks.
Topics/speakers:
- Writing Better Rails Apps — Craig Buchek
- Updates on Jeff’s multiruby project (alt to RVM) — Jeff Barczewski
- Byteworks update (Nathan Neff)
Meetings are interactive and user driven. Topic length and details are driven by interest and questions of the group.
If you want to share your experience or present another topic let us know or come to the meeting. We’re always open to new topics of interest.
After the meeting, several of us usually head to a local restaurant for food and post-meeting socializing.
I’ve put the presentation up at http://craigbuchek.com/presentations/2011–08-08/writing_better_rails — it’s just a wiki page, but it’s what I used as the basis for the presentation, other than showing actual code from my current project.
I’m working to put the audio up as well.
Enjoy,
Craig
